The Rio was filled with a bustling crowd and tangible nerves this Monday, as SCkenny and Pokerbrit met up with the six excited SpadeClub members who won seats to this year’s World Series $10,000 main event. The seat winners were checked in, handed a “swag bag” of SpadeClub apparel and goodies, interviewed by PokerBrit, and then prepared themselves for the game ahead.
Raymond “Kyle2003” Webb and Luther “moonrock1” Yow, both winners of the recent VIP tournament joined George “Ares” Ali, Jeff “DHopper4242” Miller, Patrick “TxN42090” Shipper, and Harry “HipHop” Robertson, all winners from the 2009 World Series 17 Seat Giveaway.
Be sure to regularly check SCkenny’s blog as he will be receiving and posting updates from the players. Best of luck to the winners!
Live interviews from the players will be up shortly, but in the meantime you can check out some responses from Pat “TxN42090” Shipper, the top finisher of the first World Series 17 Seat Giveaway main event tournament:
Interview with Pat “TxN42090” Shipper
SpadeClub: Tell me a little about your life outside of poker?
Pat 'TXN42090' Shipper: I am married and have two grown children. I work as Engineering / Technical Recruiter for a staffing firm in the Houston area.
SC: Are you excited to be playing in the 2009 World Series main event?
PS: Yes, very excited and a little nervous at the same time.
SC: What are you looking forward to the most when you go?
PS: To see just how well I can do and of course I’m looking forward to seeing all the great poker players.
SC: Are there any professional poker players you are looking forward to meeting or possibly playing against?
PS: There are a number of players I would like to meet; playing against them is another thing. I would like to meet Doyle, Negreanu, Ferguson, Matusow and of course Phil.
SC: What are some of your other poker accomplishments?
PS: My only other significant poker accomplishment was coming in 3rd in SpadeClub's 2008 2nd WSOP tournament, finishing right behind fugetaboutit and dkhunky.
SC: What is your general strategy going into a tournament?
PS: As my son’s track coach used to say “Get in front and stay there”. Actually, I suppose I will take it slow and easy to start, just to get used to the setting. I have found the few times that I have played in a casino it takes me a little while to feel comfortable.
SC: What was the most important thing that you did to get your game to where it is today?
PS: Basically, I play online everyday, sometimes good, sometimes not so good; but hopefully I am learning all the time.
SC: How long have you played poker and what got you interested in SpadeClub?
PS: I have played poker a little over 5 years. I was one the guys attracted to the game by the “Moneymaker Effect”. I really never was a game player of any kind and one day when I was home sick, I caught a replay of Moneymaker winning it all and I was intrigued with it.
PS: I have taken Card Player for several years and when ya’ll came up with the idea for SpadeClub it just seemed like it could work and I think it has.
SC: Do you have any general advice to share with our readers about succeeding at SpadeClub?
PS: Succeeding at SpadeClub is just like succeeding on any poker site, good play and a little luck goes a long way.
SC: Do you have any other goals on SpadeClub?
PS: I would like to win a few more Monthly tournaments and maybe a few Weekly ones, too!
SC: Do you think SpadeClub is a good learning ground for people who are looking to start playing?
PS: SpadeClub is one of the unique sites where you can play a decent poker game and learn with very little cost; so yes I do think it is a good place to learn the game and hone your skills.
SC: Anything else you would like to add?
PS: I look forward to representing SpadeClub at the WSOP 2009 Main Event.
