The most dangerous player in the 2009 WSOP
By 2tightNov 05, 09 08:19 PM

I've been watching the WSOP every week and last week my poker prayers were answered. Billy Kopp was eliminated when he finally got suited rags crushed. Kopp is the most dangerous type of player because his skill set is so limited and luck plays a much larger factor.
I watched him call out of position with Q-10 off suit and flop lucky for a set of queens. I watched him raise UTG with a 74 suited and catch running straight cards. The list of all around bad plays goes on and on, yet he came out smelling like a rose everytime.
He over valued inferior hands and when he had good hands they held up too.
This is the type of player who will kill you if they run hot and Billy was, but as dangerous to the play as this type of player is...they're more of a danger to themselves.
Kopp's chips stack had more swings than the playground at an elementary school but he had worked his way back into second. He held the lead off and on through most of day 7 play. He took a huge hit when he called off over 10 million of his 26 million chip stack with AK vs QQ.
In my opinion, just another bad call he finally got slammed for. The all in re-raise was made by a player who had a much tighter table reputation.
I would have assumed at best I was tied and why risk 40% of my stack and the lead for a tie or a race? Billy snap called like he had 4 aces in the hole. For once he couldn't come from behind. He made it back a few hands later with a 74 suited.
The end came for Mr. Kopp when ( for the 10,000th time ) he raised with suited rags and got one caller, Darvin Moon.
Now Darvin claims to not know much about poker but I beg to differ. I've seen him mix up his play very well. Raise with KK, smooth call with AA check and trap. Maybe it's because it's a like style for me but I love trapping people and respect a good trapper as well. With so much naked raw agression in poker these days and so little skill, a good trapper can get rich quick.
Darvin was the chip leader and had been showing monster hands. If Mr. Kopp had any sense he would have folded as soon as Moon called. Darvin had QJ suited....the same suit as Kopp...diamonds. Now not a great hand but moon unlike Kopp had been watching the table and knew Kopp could be raising with anything so he made the call. That and the fact that Kopp had called Moon earlier when he raised with AQ, only the catch a JJ on the flop to go with his Jack rag he called a raise with.
The flop hit ...diamond ...diamond ...diamond. Kopp was smoked. His gambling and pushing turds finally made a pile of S#!T for him to step in.
Kopp checked...LOL...I guess he thought he was trapping Moon. I believe the turn was a 2 and it was check check again. Then the river was a 2 and the board paired. Kopp then bet the river hard, 5 mill I believe.
Now the board was all low cards, Doubtful anyone had flopped the set. With the 3 diamonds on the flop any player worth his salt would have put in a small bet just to find out where he was at.
Moon came right over the top and pushed all in. Kopp never gave it a thought. He never even speculated that a FH or quads or even a higher flush was on board ( I think his flush was 6 high). Kopp snap called for all his chips ( he was in 2nd ) like a 6 high flush was unbeatable.
The cards were exposed and Billy looked like he was ready to throw up. He left the 2009 WSOP bubble boy at the final table.
Billy never gave it a second thought, never had a doubt when he was put all in by a player who had reapeatly shown the nuts all day long.
Billy Kopp was the most dangerous player in the WSOP, mostly to himself.

DO TELL !!!!!! What was Kopp's "good strategy"?...LOL. because I musta missed it. What strategy is it when you repeatedly call or raise with the worst hand and come from behind to win?.I thought that was called LUCK...not strategy. The only "strategy" I saw was "GO FISHING"
nice blog 2tight, i agree in the most, but kopp did have moments of greatness and lets not forget he had a creditable finish in the WSOPE where he was also chip leader for a while.
BUT the final nail in the coffin where he pushed with such a low flush draw was such a bad move and he deserved to be KOED.
The point you make about Darvin moon playing a good game is quite justified and personally i think he is a very gifted player and yes mixes it up a lot.
may the best man triumph.
i have seen Kopp played many good hands, dont throw on him only dirt, who had finish from all of u 12th place inWSOP main event?I think he had good strategy!!!!
To be exact on the play, the raise preflop from Kopp was 600k, he bet 750k on the flop when the 3 diamonds hit, he bet 2,035,000 on the turn and was check raised by Moon to 6,000,000. He then moved all in for his last 11m in chips into a 27m chip pot. Moon would have about 5.5m left if he had lost this hand.
Wow, I have to say I don't see the problem in deconstructing someone's play from a televised event Mirek. It allows players like us to talk about what we like and dislike about how someone plays and helps us to become better players. No one is perfect at this game, everyone makes mistakes. The televised hole cards just allows us to learn at a faster rate then we used to by being able to properly disect the situation instead of guess at it. We are also in a forum not a table, so table manners
LOL..No I don't think I'm a poker god. I have been playing since before you were born. I've seen poker go from a gentleman's game of calculated risks to a bingo parlor. Okay, it's gambling but I still don't believe wholesale gamblers will ever be as successful in the game. Skill lasts forever, luck runs out. It's a matter of respect for the game. I'm nauseated by idiotic play when it's rewarded. Unless his skill set improves Kopp will join the "who"? of poker pasts.
Yeah good point Kenny. I was thinking about why he folded pocket 4s because thats the perfect hand to crack Moon's range. If he called with 44 Moon would possibly be out a few hands later because the turn and river came 9 9 and Moon had Ace9 and I'm pretty sure hes not folding trip 9's. WOW just imagine how different the FT would be.
Yep he paid $10k and can do what he wants. No problem. He can bust out. No problem. He can blast Darvin Moon's play and blame it for his bust out. Problem. He can take the backlash. No problem.
I dont like this kind of blogs, who are you 2tight?poker GOD?WSOP champion?B.Kopp isnt my fav. player but he paid $10k entry to WSOP tourny =his chips and he can do whatever he wanna do!thats not realy good table manners be comment on players style of play.
think about it guys
amen:-)))
The truly sick part is because he got so deep he'll never question his playing ability or improve.
Don't forget about the pocket fours he had in the small blind. He fold them to a late raise. He could have called lesss then 3% of he chips and flopped a set. Very bad fold
I agree with you on this (and most things!!), 2tight. Kopp's approach works fine when multi-tabling 30 tables on the internet for $xx to win 100x $xx in one or more of them. It's an internet approach that is unlikely to succeed in a once a year live $10k buy in with a field of 6000+. That's why I say Kopp was "playing to lose".
