30K and the Raibirds
By AnteDeluvianJan 05, 09 11:31 AM

What a site, what a tourney and what a totally AWESOME group of people we have the PRIVILEGE of enjoying here at SpadeClub. If this site ever goes belly-up we're gonna need a support group and a 12 step program to deal with the loss.
------------------------
So, anyways, what a battle.I was one scared soldier out there, bobbing and weaving, diving from foxhole to foxhole, keeping my head down, peeking out from time to time only if I had a good clear shot, rolling and burning to keep my nerves in check. Patience, Pairs and Position was my mantra, often repeated to help me through those periods of marginal hands and my personal nemesis those dreaded suited connectors.
------------------------
I had a little luck early on and was able to position myself very near the top 100. Things continued to go well until I caught KK in early position.UH OH (the rest of this story has been told so many times I could easily skip it, but I won't) I briefly considered folding but instead raised 3X the BB, everyone folded to the BB who called with A 2 off and of course hit the ace. He pushed the flop and like a fool I called, turning over half my stack to the enemy leaving me with a just barely average stack. OK, OK, OK, that's enough of THAT.
-----------------------
Now it becomes about goals. First goal, make it to the cash, then 2nd level cash, then 3rd, etc.. Things seem to be going OK and soon we are down to 100 players left. Wow, I did it again. This is my second time to make it to $50 in the Monthly. Color me HAPPY, and I still have at least 20 BB left so no worries Ante, just keep playing solid, whatever got me this far will keep on taking me down the road. Patience, Pairs and Position, repeat, Patience, Pairs and Position.
--------------------------
Soon, with about 75 players left in I heard a chirpping from the rail, "Good going Ante, good luck," I'm sorry I can't remember who it was (rolling and burning to keep my nerves in check, lol) but I do know it was one of my very good SC compadres. With that bit of verbal reinforcement I aimed for my next goal and soon achieved it, 27 left and SPOY POINTS.
---------------------------
Well, I guess someone must have filled the feeders because soon there were railbirds all over the place and my pockets were filling up with the well wishes of all my SC friends. Now I don't know about the rest of you folks, but when the raibirds start singing it's like adding rocket fuel to my tank. My smile gets so big it hurts, and it causes me to want to make my friends proud of me. So, with all the WOOT WOOTS, and GO ANTEs ringing in my ears I set a goal of winning my first RED BADGE.
--------------------------
BAM, Final Table, Oh My Word, I can't believe I made it and what a cacophony from the rail. It seemed like a hundred people showed up to cheer me on. I tried for a couple of minutes to keep up but soon realized it was breaking my focus, so much to my dismay I closed the chat window and returned to the business at hand. Since I was among the short stacks now my new goal was to survive as long as I could. I finally ran out of steam and secured a 5th place finish.
-------------------------
In closing I want to SHOUT OUT to ALL the awesome people I get to enjoy every day here at SpadeClub, You people and this site ROCKKKKK

Great job Ante! I did not survive my KK bad beat early and was short stacked finaly geting busted out around 770 or so. Again, CONGRATS! is is SOOOO dificult to dodge all those bullets.
Good job, Ante.
I thought it was funny to hear some people complaining about all the railbirds talking too much. LOL! Either they are way too uptight, don't understand one of the features of SC...the 'club' atmosphere and having friends or just don't know how to turn off chat, It's a lot of fun having your friends cheer you on at a FT.

Congrats Ante!!!!
I hear ya about just trying to make each level. I was just as happy with my 65th place finish.
Cheers and good luck on the tables.

Well done! What does 5th pay?
You know, you can't get that deep on a 2000+ tourney by being lucky. You obviously play a VERY good tournament game.
I salute you and the others at that table for a job well done.
