TAKE THIS GAME AND...................................!!!!!!!!

For those of you that subscribe to the notion that poker is a game of skill, I have news for you. It is not! Poker has always been and always will be a game of chance. No one can make an argument that invalidates this fact. Here's another fact to ponder. There has never been a tournament won on skill alone, but there are numerous tournaments won every day on luck alone. Bottom line.........skill does not win tournaments........luck does! Need an example? Check out the 2009 WSOP Main Event results! Now, I am not suggesting that a solid knowledge of the game and the skill to implement that knowkedge is not vital if you want to be a successful player. However, without luck, any success will be short lived. I'm sure that everyone will agree that Phil Ivey is one of the most skilled and feared players on the circuit. Lets imagine then, for a moment, he is seated at a table. To his left sits an elephant with a severe ear infection. To his right is a kangaroo that is not only blind but also has the runs. Across the way is an orangatan wearing diapers. You can fill in the rest of the seats with your own imagination. The cards are shuffled and dealt. At this point in the game everyone at this table, regardless of their skill level or knowledge, has the exact same chance to be dealt pocket aces. How to play those aces is where Phils' skill level grants him a big advantage over everyone else. But when elephant ears calls his 3x bet with nine eight suited and kangaroo reraises with king king and the flop is eight eight king Phils' skill and knowledge can now only give him the common sense to fold. This is the only role that knowledge and skill play within a tournament structure. Knowledge and skill will allow a player to survive........ going deep into the game, thereby, exposing him or herself to more opportunities for luck to favor his play. No player, who has won a tournament, did so without jeopardising his or her stack, at least once, during that tournament. As soon as your chips are commited to the middle, skill, no longer plays any part in the outcome. I wrote this blog because too many comments are made at the tables and way too many nasty remarks are posted on peoples profiles berating and insulting them for their play. These comments are made by players who in their own mind feel, that because of their so called knowledge of the game and self proclaimed advanced skills, they did not deserve to lose. Well, heres one last fact to swallow. In any game of chance if you want to be successful learn as much about the game as you can. If you want to win, however, you must be willing to gamble and anytime you gamble you must be willing to lose. Take it like a man! HAVE A NICE DAY!

Yea in tournys luck plays a part In it and you have to some times get lucky to win. But here's a news flash poker isn't just tourny play. You put your kangaroo, orangatan? Elephant, mule, donkey, horse and chicken with ivey and 200k each infront of them and I guarentee ivey will wipe the floor with them. The real poker money is made in the side cash canes where skill rules. I see it myself. The people that luck out on me in tournys only feed my stack in cash cause it's not the same.

Poker 100% skill and 30% luck. The players that think that 100 + 30 adds up to 130 in this case are the complaining idiots that David is talking about. Nice blog., David!

I read somewhere (anyone remember where?) that in tournaments with less than 1,000 hands that luck is more powerful than skill...

why do we see alot of the same players going deep in tournaments poker period is a skill game yes luck does play a 40% roll, thats what keeps the fish in the game and the pros making money its a perfect ballance of skill vs luck just enough to keep both sides playing the game Good Luck e1

To win a tourney like the WSOP or any other with large fields you gotta get lucky. Ultimately, skill will yield results over time. Joe Cada was donkey (SC-like) lucky like ive never seen. Some luck some skill in my opinion.

I have to disagree. When I first started playing I had no knowledge and would only cash in maybe 1 out of 15 tournaments I played. Now I am pretty much cashing in online sit n go's(30% paid) 3 out of 5 and in live cash tournaments about 15-20% of the time. The only thing that has changed is my knowledge and skill level. No doubt you need to get lucky to make it work. You also must consider the final table took 14 hours to get to heads up. You saw highlights, not the real game.

Verry good blog.
Luck is a factor, but think you have to add experience, the part when everything goes wrong is in the desission making. Play, fold or raise ofcource if 9 people is in the pot you are in a game of chanche, else I think skill or experience if you like, have to be taken into consideration as the major factor of the game. But thats my oppinion, great blog though.

Very good blog. Let me say it this way.
..
Luck is the cards you are delt. Skill is how you (consistently) play them pre-flop.
..
Luck is the flop you get (or dont get). Skill is the way you play your hand after that.
..
GL and be careful at the tables.
