STATE CHAMPIONSHIP RESULTS
By HandboneAug 18, 09 05:11 PM

I ended up being in the second group which played on day 2 on Sunday which gave me a chance to play for Cyprus on Saturday. We met my wife’s sister at a resort they were staying at and I took over their room while they were at the pool so I could set up the laptop for the game. I made it to 900 something before I busted out and struggled the whole way. We hung out at the pool afterwards. There were a couple of drunk girls who were talking to my brother in-law in the pool while we were on deck. One of them was big up top and her top came undone and fell forward accidentally while she was talking to him, which was kind of funny… but the wives didn’t think it was so funny.
When we got to our hotel, I went into the lobby to check in and they had a welcome sign posted in the middle of the reception area. It read… “We welcome guest of the day ” with my name on it. I had to do a double take to make sure I wasn’t seeing things. That’s a good sign I thought :). I asked them if a prize came with that and they gave me complimentary late check out, $5 store credit and 2 free drinks at the bar. I also received $30 off per night as a poker player discount… and this isn’t even a casino hotel, which made for a great deal.
Before the game started Sunday morning, they pointed out 2 previous ladies champs who were in this tourney and announced a $500 bounty on their heads. They also gave all the women who entered a free seat at the ladies state championship. A couple guys yelled out, “Discrimination” and everybody laughed. After the first hand, a dealer yelled “Player Out” while the director still had the mic in his hand. He said,”Are you kidding me?” He then made the player come up to the podium to embarrass him and ask him what his hand was. He said it was A-Q suited in spades against A-K. The director then announced him as the “Biggest Loser in Arizona” and gave him the prize of half his buy-in back for that title. By the time we were done laughing, I pick up A-Q in middle position and raised cautiously...lol. I got called by A-9 and the flop came A-9-8 which caused me to lose $1,200 of my $10k starting stack. 45 minutes later, blinds are now $50-$100 and the guy in front of me raises to $500. I call with A-J with one caller behind me. Flop comes 5d-5h-Jd. He leads out for $600. Good flop for me and I put him on standard continuation bet with middle pair maybe. Time to find out how strong he is so I re-raise to $1,600. Guy behind me calls and so does original bettor. I figured the call behind me was a weaker Jack or diamond draw. The turn was 6s and the guy in front checks. I could’ve checked, but I didn’t want to give him a chance of filling up his pair or landing an over card so I bet $2k. The guy behind me slowly calls and the guy in front folds. At this point, I’m pretty sure if the guy behind me had a 5, he would’ve raised here to protect against the flush draw. He also seemed the type who would try to outplay someone every hand before this. The river was the Queen of clubs. It’s possible he’s been calling with QJ and I know if he had a missed flush draw that he would try to outplay me here so I decided to check to see what he does. He reached for his chips, so I reached for mine to let him know I would be calling him down. He bets $2,400… dang, a value bet which was almost scarier than a shove. I call hoping he has K-J and he flips over a well played A-5 which cost me half my remaining chips. Over the next few hours I lost more chips with 3 big slicks and a couple suited connectors that never connected. I ended up doing a desperation shove with 1 and a half blinds left and a suited K-9 which ran into A-10. At least I got a free hat and bottle of sunscreen out of it. I played a morning tourney the next day. Waiting on the bubble to pop, I had $15k when a short stack of $7k shoves with Q-9 against my pocket JJ. He hit 2 pair on the flop and now I was the short stack. Next orbit I shove with K-J suited in diamonds and run into A-J. Out of 100 people, I bubbled at number 11 which earned me a seat in the Bubble Boy tournament coming up in December. So for 3 days of playing, I get a hat, 2 free drinks and an upcoming seat… so I guess it wasn’t a total loss. Time to rebuild my bankroll and try again at the next big one.
Good luck at the tables!

You write a great blog sir!.Thanks for sharing. It's tuff when u get outflopped or being eaten up by the blinds when are card dead. The experience alone is worth the trip and with your skill it won't be long til u r back in the chips.
