Donk School - Lesson 4: The Value of Ace Rag
By HasleyJan 13, 09 12:03 AM

You will find that most of the time it's not profitable to play ace-rag, even suited, unless the pot is large due to many callers calling a 2 or 3 (BB) bet raise preflop or you can get in cheap if others players are not showing strength. In that case, I might even raise 2 or 3 BB especially at the final table
That said, you can really only play them consistently well from preflop late position or blinds since you can't be sure of these circumstances any other way.
DON'T's
- Don't play them from early position.
- Don't raise from the blinds with them
- Don't call a big bet in front of you preflop unless you are at the final table and even then play careful.
Do's
Do play them in a large multiway pot for one and perhaps 2 bets
Do play them for free or 1/2 a bet in the blinds when you can
+++++++A Study of Ace Rag (A8) +++++++
-Expected win rate = 18.57% (4.39:1 against you winning)
- a 2.9% edge on a random hand.
-You will have about a 30% chance to have a decent hand after the flop to play on to the turn
- You will have only 7.8% chance for a 6+ out situation
- A8 has a 10.2% chance of having two over cards on the flop (any rag less is less)

COMMENTS
I think your vent is misguided Nick as I am on your side. The other guy had the Ace rag. Not you. My invite for your input was/is sincere yet you think you are the target it seems.

So far I have no reason to smack down your play nor have I ever said anything to you but nice hand. So what gives here?
haha, u made St Nick laugh, I actually play the QQ when I play my best and fold a rag. As for u taking what I say wrong, dont feel bad, a lot of people do. just shows how much Im aware of players as well as how much u arnt. Im not only not that kind of person, it is important to me to maintain it. My responses were meant to be amusing as well as informative. your opinion is understood and I will give u a serious comment next just cause u made me laugh, but I really dont need a reason
I dont comment seriously for players on the way hands are played without careful consideration. The truth is that your blog has valid points, but u knew that. As for why players play A rag, the best u can hope for is to develop a strategy to deal with that. I will give u a few clues and Im sure u can come up with more. one idea is to develop ur experience of the players ur playing or the type of player on ur game. change ur play to stay alive.
for example I have enough experience here that when Im focused on a game, I probably know what type of player is within a few hands and sometimes its only one hand. I know so many players that even if I dont know them that affects my decision too. I actually fold AK against QQ sometimes as well as fold the QQ. Players who can do that and avoid those "Races" at times they dont want to risk. If a player decides to take a risk then the outcome is academic. the skill is deciding when to make it.
another Idea is to consider the biggest factor in why players play either side of ur hand selection. they dont care what their cards are let alone ur example. they play their stacks. If ur playing against that type of player, the choice is urs as to when u make it or fold it and u have to live with ur decision. my last idea for u, is just another of several others. Players agenda in a game can be sized up within a few hands, depending on what kind of tourny it is and what are up to.
for example, and this is just one that shows how a donk instructor operates. lets take a tourny like one that is testy for players. the red token. I have 15 red and get all the points anytime I want. My only reason to even play the silly tourny is get a bounty or 30 spoy rating points. I dont really care if I go out on the first hand playing whatever hand I even halfway like. My agenda is to pad my bounty count, throw my stats, get spoy points and make players think I play bad.
my last comment for this class is for what u really need to look at. Which players play alot and which play a little. some players play only a few hours a few days a week. they tend to play at the extreme ends of any style. either they are focused or they arnt paying attention. In a game of higher cash this is very obvious. players who are regulars stick out, the others are playing a game on the side of their agenda and how u read that is skill too.
I hope this blog was more about information of the weakness of Ace rag and not a lecture on how to play against it or with it. Simply info that can be used and adapted to your own style of play.

The truth is I won't often have advice on how to play a situation vs the simple break down of what is and the longrun values of the situations. I think everyone can get something that way without claiming or preaching I or anyone else it a better player. Donk School is for everyone!
2 more cents worth. There are only 2 situations in which u should ever even call w A rag, and then u should raise with it. 1. U are so SS u need to "steal" blinds and antes, and u are in late position w no more than 1 limper in front. 2. Medium to large stack, again late position w no more than 1 limper, and again u are "stealing" blinds and antes. U never just call, and when u do decide to push with it, u do not want any callers. GL at the tables.
TY 4 informative blogs Hasley (luv ur avatar)!Personally,A/rag is a chipburner, except in those few occasions that you mentioned.
well I would play A rag if your first to act, its a semi bluff at best, with suited you do have a shot at a flush draw or flush. with 9 players at the table the odds of you having the only ace is 70%. See WPT. So hitting the ace is great, you still need to play with caution. A2-A5 have possiblities of wheel draws with flush draw. So the odds of improvement increase at the lower end. if you hit two pair you can trap. tournament play you need to play medicore hand more than a cash game. if the bli
That's alot of ifs johnny-u R loose.R u gonna call pf raises with that also-hoping to hit an ace on flop?
cont.-Then if you do pair your ace,u got kicker probs.Lotsa trouble my friend.Just my 2 cents.
How many times do you see it... you raise 5X blind on button with AK suited. A7 calls from utg then flops A7J. I hate A rag. Cant win with it and cant beat it lol Gr8 blog tks for the thoughts
A rag well when i first started playing here i played them all the time usually never won a hand now i fold them low and behold 7times out of ten the cards i folded would have won the hand . so how do u play em i dont believe in the win ratio or odds thats just plain garbage to me lol
I follow you LooseJohnny and what you are saying. Truth is I DO play ace rag in position fo semi bluff or cheap flop. Ace rag is very good to work with at the FT and the final 3 when we are playing short handed. You won't see me calling with it unless presed by blinds and antes and I am short stacked very often though.
nah I will not play Arag with preflop raises because you just might walk into a better kicker, but I am loose so I cannot say completely no. otherwise I would have to get a new name.

Its funny when players see me with a rag and trash talk me when I donk them or laugh at me for gettin crushed, this topic is the most crucial in being a donk. You could run a blog for a month on players opinions on being an A hole player. whether your name is Pillmouth, Motormouth,Mightymouth, Hellmouth or whatever. Out of all the styles u can donk with, playin with A rag has got to be a classic. Not only can u wipe your Donky butt with A rag, A rag comes in handy for players who cry or need to
