A Response to SC Player "Friendly"

By Hasley
Mar 05, 09 09:37 PM

This blog is a response to a request from player "Friendly" who wrote: --- "Hey Buddy. How are you doing? I have a question for you. I seem to be in a rut lately. I am pressing bad hands and folding early on good ones. When this happens to you (if it ever has) what do you do? I am becoming frustrated with my play and my play is frustrating me. I would appreciate any counsole you can give. Thanks."
-----------------------------
Sorry my friend it took about 10 days for me to write this.
--

Here goes…
This happens to everyone at one time or another. If anyone says "not true", they are lying and/or an ABC Call Cat (verses a call station) and need to play more.
--
In poker, no matter how good you are running you will eventually hit a run of the bad cards. This is due to the fact that poker has a large element of short-term luck, it doesn’t matter whether any one effort, session, day or week is successful. What does matter the most is knowing when a positive expectation is associated with a given play and playing it appropriately.
---
If you want to be a better poker player or break out of a "rut", you need to be brutal about yourself and your play. Take 2 days off NOT just one. This way you come back hungry and you have time to examine what you are doing right and time to think hard about what you were doing wrong. Are you playing to many hands? Are you playing out of position? Are you playing to gamble vs. playing to win? Did you let Ego rule your last play? Did you call another player a name?
---
When I am playing bad, I take stock in the value of my goal short and long term. If you do not have a goal, don't play another hand. If your goal is simple, "play for fun" I say GREAT and have fun. You will win some and lose more but it will be pretty cheap entertainment. If your goal is to be recognized as a winning player and the earnings that come from it, you need to step up and be a winner in life as well as proving you can hold your own cards.
---
This brings me back to the earlier mention that calling another player a name at the table is a sign of you playing bad. This seems contrary does it not? I mean, most players call down other players because their opponent came from behind and took a pot or their entire stack when they were ahead or had so few outs or odds it was a hail mary. I call these name calling Players ABC Call Cats or Mules (half donks) who often know enough to quote a stat or a book reference but not enough to know how to turn that information into positive value at the table or in their life. They feel entitled to the win and cultivate the image of success and respect without really earning it. They are quick to pounce on others and use all nine lives climbing the ladder to the top of the game only to look at every reason why they could not win rather than adapting to the other players and the table dynamics.
---
Good Luck and see you at the Final Table!

Hmm. Not sure how 2 respond. Great blog! But, I am one of ur "ABC" players; TAG. I never press bad hands, but I do sometimes lay down the best hand when I should not have. I never call anyone a name. In fact, my attitude is, I have the best hand and I welcome ur (bad) call. Thats the only way to collect chips. If you draw out, oh well. Maybe next time. Anyway, great blog and I agree with your need 4 self assessment. Just not sure I totally agree with ur generalization of a "ABC" player.

Hi PhilGnFla, Don't confuse by the book poker (ABC) as winning poker. It is infact a door you need to go through 4 sure if one is ever to be a long term winning player but ABC play is break even poker.
-
The best players can play ABC and most spend many hours & years as ABC players. Nothing wrong with it, I even think it is required, but an ABC is a solid but novice profile. Many know how to play well but have yet to undestand what conditions and plays maximize their returns.

Great blog Hasley. You have really given me a new perception on this game. I know the book stuff is very important in the game and I intend to read super systems I and II, but what you said in your blog about adapting and looking at positive expectations was a real eye opener for me thank you and keep blogin. Just won my second month and i'm playin in the 5K weekly tonight, thx again. Doc
