I Need Some Opinions From Others about a Live Hand

In a recent live tournament, I was in middle position with QQ. Average stack was about 16K. I had 8.5K. We are about half way through the event. Under the Gun opens for 1.6K. The blinds are 400/800. Two folds to me. I raise to 3K. two folds to the button, a strong player with about 22K. He goes all-in. Under the Gun folds. I made a very reluctant call. My thinking was that if I folded I would only have about 1/3 average stack with the big blind coming to me in four hands. The button showed KK and went on to win and knock me out of the event. I would appreciate any input from SC members. The event entry fee was !,060. It paid out to 12 places. 166 players were entered.

I think you did ok. After all, you had a very good hand and you must not be afraid to play your monster or the blinds will eat you. It was just your bad luck that someone had one of the only two better preflop starting hands. The button could have had AK, AQ, JJ, or even a lesser hand. That's why poker is fun. We have to work with insufficient information and do the best we can.

I would have made the same call for the same reason. Sometimes we need to gamble and pre flop is a gamble. You could have folded and waited for the blinds by then perhaps 1000, twenty percent of your stack and what if you had 72 off suite, now we wait for lets say AJ, you call the blind, someone raises to 2 or three k, the flop looks like a low to mid str8, you get raises, now what. The problem here is low stack, not QQ or KK, I think the moral of the story is to figure out how to take more smal

figure out how to take more small pots on the way. If we wait for the perfect cards we can sometimes do well but may not get the calls we need and then we wind up low stacked mid tournament. Too loose can kill the stack too. I think when the blinds are lower play some low baller cards and knock out that AA when it comes. Seeing a few more hands and playing some cards that are not perfect can build a stack so you don't get low later on. You can always fold the low cards but can hit large sometime

a slightly better play would have been to call or go all in after the first bet. u hav to decide which u like. dependin on ur style or attitude, either is better than a token raise. u get that anyways from just a call, y risk more chips, playin all in forces the issue, and odds r in your favor.

From what you have described, you only had 10 BB. I would have pushed all-in instead of raising. The button with Ks would have called anything. More than likely, if you only called the 2 BB raise, the button would have pushed or reraised making you decide on if he had a hand or was just trying to steal the pot. You played well and just got beat. Well done.

"From what you have described, you only had 10 BB. I would have pushed all-in instead of raising. " - what this guy said

You put in approx 40% of your stack with the raise, folding to a push should not even cross your mind at this point.

Ok so now the hand, ask yourself about the UTG player? was he playing a lot of hands and opening with 2x raise? If you say yes and he was playing a lot of hands and was opening a lot of pots, he is more then likely to have a weak hand and your Q's are so good there. You had 8.5K you put in 3k ( but you had to put in 3.2K, really) you now have 5.3K left, now lets say everyone folded back to the UTG play and he just calls, the pot is now 7600 giving you no real play on the flop but to move in

Ok say you give the guy UTG A,K and you dont think he is going to fold the hand, so you want to see the flop and if a A, or K comes you get away from the hand, then you dont want to make a min raise there, so bad. LOOK you have the 3ed BEAT starting hand and the UTG player has only put in 1600, if you push there he will fold most hands and if you get called you are more then likely (70%-30%)ahead.
Now, you are just unlucky to run into K's, nothing you can do.

If you push, you do not have to do any more thinking, and maybe the guy with K's thinks hard and maybe (but not likely) he folds.
But if you push and the guy with K's has 0 and it is back to the UTG player, if he calls you are a big Fav to win.
I know you might be thinking min raise UTG=A's right??
Again if you have been watching and have seen him play a lot of hands, I would say that is a small % of the A's being there.

I have to say there is a lot missing from the info, ants? how many left? If I was to put something together here I would say there was like 45-65 players left. Something eles,1060 buy-in and 166 players, they are only paying 12?? WHAT??? Bellagio will pay 18 playingers after 130-140 on there 1060buy-ins.
So maybe 65 of it goes to the house and now 995x166= 16517
30% for 1st or so maybe 49,500. So 12th would be like 9,100
Maybe it is just me but I think something is really wrong here.
