I believe that both of your questions are actually related to one another. The reason that the river card destroys so many hands is because mathematically the final card has more power to make a hand. It has 6 other cards that it can combine its self with to make a hand. Before that point, no other card has that much help. And I think the name comes from, being "sold dowm the river" or, "up the river without a paddle"

i get burned on the river too alot ive lost alot of big pots cause of the river i hate the river but he is right that is poker lol
People need to stop bitching about the river. It is part of the game, or it wouldn't be holdem. And every one of us knows sometimes we are screaming king king on the river, cmon king.........so everyone get over it or go play chess or something
If chips keep going into the pot, or worse yet, the hand gets checked down then the river card is going to be shown. You can't hate it, its part of the game. The thing is it is easier to remember the beats than the wins. I find it hard to believe that 90% of the time you see the river, AND are already ahead in the hand you lose.
As I've said many times before, the "Mickey" card at Spade Club is the turn card. The majority of the suckouts here come on that card....
This is such a common complaint in poker. Take comfort in knowing that if you are getting beat by river cards often, then you are playing good poker, or rather you are playing your cards well. If you are getting to the river too often, perhaps you should limit that by betting better. That is to say, don't allow people to river you by pricing them out of a pot, especially if you feel you have the best hand pre or post flop. Too many people slow play big hands only to allow a suckout on the river.
