Regular game I think the strategy that works best for me is tight aggressive early on. When the blinds get up to like the 4th and 5th rounds you should open your range a little bit more. This all has to be factored in with a ton of other things like your table image, other players image, is your table playing weak hands, are they playing strong hands etc etc. Use what style works best for you. The more situations you are involved in the better decisions you will find yourself making. GL 2 YOU!

Help for a newbie
By bongoFeb 26, 09 11:35 PM

As someone who has played poker for about a year...I was wondering if some more experienced players could give me their opinion. I have read that as the antes go up, you tend to loosen up your game. Does this hold true online, and how does a turbo game, vs a regular game affect that rule?
Thanks for your contributions.

Antes usually come late in the game (150/300) and they can add
to the threat of being blinded off if you play too tight.
If you've made it past the "cut off point".....18, 153, 198 etc
(in the points) you have to be very carefull.....make moves
based on position, chip stack and how well you know who's
playing.......you don't always need the great cards (that helps)
to win.
Turbo games give you less time to act....you need to work on
playing ahead of the game like in chess.
Playing tight is optimal early on. Keep pots small. As antes kick in...make your standard opens to 2.5-2.7x instead of the usual 3x. You should loosen up a bit as the tournament goes on, especially on the money bubble. The bubble is where you should gain enough chips to give you a decent shot of making a final table. Don't be afraid to go out on the bubble. This is the most important thing on this site. You should abuse the money bubble and the final table bubble. Gain chips, go deeper.

Listen to ChilyRooster, he is right on the money; &, what he is saying is in the poker books, e.g. “Tournament Poker for Advanced Players” – David Sklansky. You should always play tight aggressive, but because these are very fast tournaments, i.e. blinds and antes increase very rapidly, you need to get a chip lead early to stay up with the blinds; so you play looser early with a wider range of hands. Of course you must know your opponents; lots of variables to consider.
Playing TAG (tight aggressive) is how you should play when the blinds are small. Don't play loose early and tighten up as the tournament goes. You should vary your play based on..your table, your position, and most importantly..your stack size. You should tighten up when you have 17-25 big blinds as raise folding with this size stack is awful. If you have 30+ big blinds, you can loosen up a bit. Playing a very LAG style early will make for a quick exit against good players.
You gotta remember your opponents' actions at the table..NOTES will keep you guarded, use it as your tool how to play them, when you get comfortable, play the player not your cards...but this will take more practice..you have to know the player. Just one factor that I use...helps me in my live games. I usually watch the players at the tables ..sometimes .I tend to have low stack at the 1st hour of the game..cuz I'm sensing my opponents' actions!!!!
I have more wins than lose in my live games cuz I tend to observe the players' TELL first....then if comfy, start making moves...but in internet it's all different. Some players go all in on a draw here...actually a lot of them, so take notes....just hope they miss their draws, but they are the best customers!!!

HI, I have watched you play, I think you are a great player.
You have to adjust your thinking online as opposed to live because there are many other elements, other than just antes going up and what to do.
You already have figured a great deal out, so watch some of the regualrs, and apply to yourself what makes sense to you.
There is no, one golden rule as far as I believe.
Do what feels good to you, play, learn, grow your way :)
