Baby steps

Normally I'm a small stakes limit player. But recently I've started playing some small buy-in tournaments with some "relative" success.

Success for me used to be not being the first woman knocked out of the tournament. My first tournament I think I lasted all of 15 minutes, mostly because I'd never really played no limit in anything other than a friendly home game and I was very intimidated. It wasn't that I wasn't getting cards...I had a few decent starting hands. I just didn't really understand how to play no limit, and even the smallest raise scared me off my hand.

Then it was making it to the break. The first time I did that was in a ladies-only event, and I think I got knocked out shortly after the break ended. But that really boosted my confidence in that no guy could try to out-muscle me.

Earlier this year, I played in a 70+ player charity event with my husband and some of his work buddies. This tournament REALLY upped my confidence, because it was the first time that I realized that sometimes the guys are more afraid of the ladies than we are of them. Once I figured this out, I dominated my way to the final table, finishing a disappointing 7th (bubble girl). Even though I missed the money, the fact that I outlasted every lady, my husband, his friends, and most of the other guys made me realize that, while luck is involved, patience and level-headedness are the most important qualities a poker player can possess.

I have yet to cash in a live tourney, but my day is coming. I have progressed so much from even a year ago, and it's going to happen. I am playing better than ever now and I don't let myself get rattled by jackasses. My goal is to cash in at least one big online or live tournament before the end of the year. If I can do that, I'm off to the WSOP next year for the ladies event -- or maybe I'll just play the $1500 no limit event and beat up on some of you boys. :)

Til next time....GO BUCKS!
