news on the latest from dcr ,,we all know as doc ,,and his daughter sommer's accident

Good Morning,

Let me try to bring you up to date. Sommer is out of the hospital and home. I have been spending my days by her bedside playing a card game she loves called Phase 10. Her spirit is such that when I beat her, she gets mad and when she wins she claims I let her win. Some things never change. This is all a bittersweet haze. We are so very thankful that she survived the crash and I know it could have been worse, and on the other hand I worry about Sommer and hope that her facial scars will not change her spirit. Since she and I are so close I thought I would bring her back to Tulsa with me. But after seeing all her friends at her bedside I know that her getting used to her scars and her healing needs to be done here. She should not have to to used to new friends as well. So more than likely I am going to stay right here.

The accident.

After m9idnight she was returning a dvd to blockbuster for a friend. She was attempting to turn left and was in the middle of the intersection as the light turned yellow. She thought that the on coming pick-up truck was going to stop for the red light and tells it that he instead increased his speed to beat the red light. She was sited, and when I tell her that it would be almost impossible for her to prove her account she gets angry. (Like I said, Some things never change.)
The truck struck her at the front passenger headlight. (the other driver is fine) She was not wearing a seat belt and the impact launched her through the windshield. this made a very clean cut from her eyelid to her hairline. She was pulled back into the car through the windshield with the glass catching her right cheek and cutting all the way through from the corner of her mouth half way up to her ear. This is a very jagged cut. She makes jokes about the jokers scared smile, but I know, and can see her tear up from time to time when she thinks about it. I think about all the times she has dyed her hair green or some other odd color inviting people to stare, and I know that when they stare because of her scars it will be much different for her. I know that they can do wonders now-a-days, but it will take some time. Tuesday we will have some stiches removed and maybe get some more answers. They have talked about some cosmetic surgeries in about 9 month after this heals.

Sommer is a responsible girl and her car insurance was about to expire the day of the accident. She called me in Tulsa about 4 hours before the accident and had me pay her car insurance from her bank account that evening. So she was covered. Her car insurance takes care of $10,000 of her medical bills. Of course the 11 hours of surgery eat that up. She was a hostess at Texas LongHorns and had just gotten her medical insuurance a couple of weeks prior. What surprised me was that it caps out at $3,000. Guess she choose the cheapest plan she could.

I want to thank everyone for their thoughts, prayers, and efforts to raise money for her bills. I know that in the big picture, that there are people out there who have suffered more than Sommer, and I understand. But this one hits close to home. This is my daughter. I know times are hard, and I will not ask you to send money. If you do, it will be accepted, and used to try to get her smile back. You know what we were able to accomplish putting pressure on poker sites as a group. And as group, you could make a real impact here as well.

DrCheckRaise.com

I am accessing this from the public library. So I am unable to be as active as I have been in the past. I have said time and time again that this site is not about me, that it is bigger than me and that the accomplishments of this group has everything to do with the group of talented players we have here. Prove me right. Keep this site fresh and informative even if I cannot be here. It is your site. Use it, grow it, and learn from it. Thank you to those who have stepped up and taken control here to see that you are still served. I encourage you to make posts, continue with your poker discussions, and continue to grow the site.

I can acces my aol e-mail via cell phone at krcallis@aol.com. That is the best way to reach me.
Thanks again,
Sommer's Dad

The best to you all. What happenned is tough, by any standard. Just remember, depression will set in at some point, possibly showing as overcheerfulness. Check out therapy options. A good source is the VA hospital. They have many cases like this. Good luck, and if you need anything send me a pm.
