outplayed... by myself
By jl131May 19, 08 12:40 PM

well, for once i can look at how i got knocked out of a tourney and for the most part realize i have no one to blame but myself. i made a terrible laydown yesterday that ultimately blew it for me. went like this - utg+1 raise, one call, i call w/AQ, button calls. flop comes AJ3 rainbow. raiser checks, caller checks. i don't know what possessed me to check, but for some reason in my mind i just knew AJ was out there. button bets 1500. raiser and caller fold to me. I had about 5k left at this point. I knew my options were fold or shove. I was torn here, thinking he could be trying to steal w/something like 99, could be A/10-Q, maybe 33 (didnt think it could be JJ or AK cause i would've expected reraise pre). I have busted out of far too many tourneys with just one pair, and just couldn't shake the feeling he had AJ, so I laid it down. He showed his hand - A5. what a terrible feeling.
I recovered though, built up a decent stack. then came the crippler. pick up JJ and raise, Mr. A5 reraises. uh oh. again, same options in my mind - shove or fold. but then i think nah let me try stop & go. hopefully he has AK and misses or has KK/QQ and an A flops, then if I shove the flop I can steal. Sure enough, flop comes Axx. I shove. he INSTACALLS with KK. didn't even flinch or hesitate. and it was for a decent portion of his stack. wow. I would've had to at least CONSIDER the possiblity of an ace if i were him. but ironically there was some talk at the table earlier about how everybody calls everything on spadeclub and this guy was one of the ones knocking people for it. but he calls raises preflop with ace-rag like its his job, and instacalls in a spot like this. wow. could've folded and still had a well-above avg stack.
so i was crippled. I probably could've busted that guy w/my AQ vs. his A5 but i screwed the pooch there. I did double back up, but busted a little while later- limped w/K10 suited, not a good play I know, but the stack i had was a little too much to just shove preflop. i wasnt going to raise w/out shoving either, so I just hoped to see a cheap flop and hopefully hit it. ended up just me & the blinds, and it was a rainbow flop w/2 spades (I had clubs). I bet 1/2 pot and BB big stack called. turn was another rag that gave me flush draw so i shoved my last ~2500 into ~2300 pot trying to chase him if he was on a draw. sure enough, he calls w/just a flush draw - 3-9 spades. river... 9. gg me. they're right - nobody can fold anything on this site.
about 2 minutes later the sun. $550 started. 2nd i hand i pick up AK suited, end up in 3-way allin preflop vs. ak and AA. sick. i knew one of them had the bullets the way the raising was going but i was tilted from the 5k and figured fk it at that point. oh well, guess I don't know how to fold either lol
