(cont'd).. sitting on the button, i happen to pick up pocket 10s. normally this is "insta" call or all-in for almost every player including me. but something just wasn't right. being10 handed game, 6 hands totaling 12 cards hit the muck which could mean 12 number cards. therefore chance of picture card coming on flop is higher than normal and not knowing what the sb and bb would do, my first instinct was "FOLD." but instead, i went all-in to make it heads-up against the UTG.

i suck
By jl131Jun 01, 08 09:19 PM

because i couldve done so much better than 62nd in the wsop tourney tonight. good pot on the 2nd hand brought me up to almost 8k in chips right away. then i went card dead. i won 3 or 4 small pots and just folded, folded, folded, folded, and somehow managed to cash. then things actually started turning. before i know it i'm up to 62k in chips and in the top 35. then the mistake... with blinds 4000/8000, utg miniraises (GOD HOW MUCH I HATE THAT!!!). so getting about 4.5-1 I have to call from the BB with my J9. Flop comes AAJ. so mathematically that meant less chance he had an ace. only one way to find out - he bets about 1/2 pot, i raise but not all in to make it look like i want a call. except then he shoves. oh well, i'm screwed. so i lay it down so I can try to turn my now-tiny stack into something again. and i actually did recover a bit, getting back over 30k.
then the killer, the hand that could've sent me on my way - i pick up pocket 10s and end up in an all-in threesome vs. AK and QJ. all i need is to dodge paint and aces and i'm in 6 figures in chips. flop bricks out. turn... king. ugh. i was left with 8k
i get a walk on my next bb to get to 11k. pick up 88 and shove, get called by A7 and double back up again. but i'm still in all-in or shove mode. pick up K10, shove, get an insta-call. so i know i'm behind, just hoping to be live. sure enough - AJ. flop -nothing. turn - nothing. River - J. gg me
no, not really :( my instincts told me to fold the J9 but my brain overtook my gut and made me call just based on the pot odds. I've gotten in arguments before that sometimes you say screw the pot odds. This was one time I should've listened to my own argument. had i folded there who knows. but the 10s really hurt the most. that one card, that king on the turn, meant the difference in this tournament for me. If i win, i'm over 100k in chips, probably in top 10 at that point, and I love my chances.
instead, just a bitter disappointment.

COMMENTS
(cont'd).. why not, he is holding KJo, K comes on the flop, J comes on the turn, x on the river. this takes off 2/3 of my stack as 2 hands later, i make all-in with pocket Js, big stack calls with A9o, A on the flop, and x - x ... had i followed my first instinct with the pocket 10s, i wouldn't have gotten a call from the big stack holding A9o when i went all-in with pocket Js... but i shall not, and will not dwell on what happened. tomorrow waits another tourney.

hi,sorry to hear what happened to you in the 40K monthly. i know exactly how you feel when you say "had followed my instincts..." i was in very similar situation playing in one of weekly $175k sunday tourney at an other site today. after having been playing for about 5 hrs into the tourney, we were down to 75 from little over 1200. managing to keep my stack a little over average, this hand came. smaller stack opens up by going all-in UTG, comes to me unchallenged,
