Variance and donkness can be 2 very evil factors. But besides those, the cards, the timing, your focus, and a variety of other things is what makes this game so intriguing. Then compile that with the layers of bad players in big numbers in a "freeroll" type environment. Even pokers best go thru these type of neg. swings so u cant let it get u down. I think Handbone says it best when u need to take a break. Re-charging and a little break is always good. GL to u !

Poker is an up and down game...
By joerevs300Jul 19, 09 10:55 AM

Well this by far has been my worst week on Spade Club...whether it was not getting good cards, taking bad beats or making bad decisions my best finish was a 7th in the Card Player Freeroll. Outside of that I hadn't even sniffed a final table. This is in contrast to my first 2 weeks, where I finished 5th and 8th respectively in a Friday 500 Nightly.
I suppose that no matter what the caliber of player, they go through slumps where either they can't win a tournament or don't make the money/lose a lot of money in the cash games.
What is the best solution when this happens? Do you just keep playing and try to work through it? Or is it better to maybe step away from a week, except for the big ones (5K/30K), to recharge?

When you're playing for free, not much need to back away. To make a change, take a break and read a new poker book. Give yourself a new mental outlook on the game by learning a new strategy. The hardest part about poker is your mind set on the downside and feeling like you are just kidding yourself. Be determined and you'll get through it.
