The Real Deal
.

A hand with Bone
.

Every sunday that I can I play in the 5k or the 30k. I make it a point to follow a few of the top players who I respect and watch them battle it out with their table.

.

Last sunday I made it down to the 600 mark before the Grim Reaper came for me and deposited my head on the cyber rail. In my thirst to improve my game, I was looking for a top player to watch the rest of the tourney.

.

Most of the top players I watch were already gone but I noticed Handbone was still in it so i camped out at his table and watched him play.
.

Handbone to say the least has been very impressive on Spadeclub. Just a part time player he won a 2008 WSOP Main Event seat on Spadeclub, he was the 1st Card Player Caribbean Cruise Winner and while on that cruise he won the first tournament and became a Card Player Cruises Tournament Champion. He also placed 4th in the Omaha Hi/Lo event while onboard. He used the money he won on the ship to enter this year's 2009 WSOP Event#24 and cashed with the world's finest players at 157th place out of over 2,000 players which doubled his buy-in.

.

Last Sunday in Spadeclub's weekly $5k with the blinds at 200/400 ante 25 Handbone gets into a big pot with the big stack at the table, usmc, who is no slouch himself. I watched this hand intently and thought I had it figured out. When the cards were turned over I realized that I just got a free lesson in poker from Handbone & USMC.
.
Usmc333 finished 74th out of 3133

.

Handbone went on to finish 103rd out of 3133 hopefuls beating 97% of the field. I recently had a chance to talk to Handbone about this key hand and Handbone has agreed to share his thoughts on how it went down.

.

Here it is straight from the horses mouth.
.
.

"When the marine hit the table, he was the big stack on the table of about $18k and I had around $8k when this hand came up. The blinds were $200-$400 ante 25 and usmc was UTG and raised to 4x the blind at $1,600. The action comes to me in middle position and I’ve got pocket Jacks. His avatar was of himself which showed a grey haired guy, he’s a marine and he was the big stack who was playing tight since he had hit the table. My read on him was that of a Rock. Normally I would’ve raised here, but considering how tight he had been, I figured I should play it safe. Right away I assumed he must have either a pocket pair or a big ace and it was just a question of how big. So I called thinking he would probably play straightforward and not get carried away with an insane shove or something.
.
.

The flop came Qh-4h-5c and he led out for $1,200. This was smaller than his pre-flop bet which to me has 3 possible meanings. He’s nervous about the Queen but wants me to know he has a hand, he has a big ace that missed and it was a continuation bet, or he flopped a set of Queens and threw out a weak continuation bet to trap me. I needed to know where I was at so I min-raised him back to see what he does.
.
He calls.
.

The turn brings the King of spades and he checks. Since he didn’t re-raise me on the flop, I’m ruling out A-Q, K-K and A-A. Now I’m ruling out pocket Queens figuring he would’ve made me pay on the turn in case I’m chasing the flush or straight draw now. I’m left to think he either has smaller pockets or A-K which he might’ve hung onto since I didn’t raise back much on the flop and he had me out-stacked. Since I’m short-stacked, I decided to try to keep the pot small so I checked.
.

The river is the King of hearts and he leads out for another $1,200. Whoa! Where did this value bet come from all of a sudden? Did I miss something? Flush draw hit? It is now that I realized I misplayed this hand and should’ve bet the turn to continue representing my hand so he might’ve checked the river instead of a bet here. I was more concerned with figuring out what he had rather than thinking of how my actions looked to him as far as what my hand was. I thought about how my actions must’ve looked and figured he probably thinks I have a pair of fives. I again decided to play it safe and just call. If I was wrong, I would be down to four orbits and feeling pressured to make some moves. I call and he flips over pocket 10’s.
.

Usmc333 UTG 10c 10d
.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Qh 4h 5c Ks Kh
.
Handbone MID POS Js Jc
.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>POT 11200
.

I considered this a key hand for me because I finally made it up close to $15k which allowed me to play an aggressive game after that and go fairly deep. I ended up placing 103rd out of 3,133 for a $10 win."
.

From Rando the railbird’s mouth
.

I myself totally misread both players hands and their betting patterns. I really believed Usmc333 had QQ KK or AA with his 4xBB UTG raise and was convinced he held QQ the way the last 3 rounds of betting went.

.

His betting just screamed of” please don’t go away Bone”. The smallish flop bet and smooth call on the min raise I took as massive strength

.

I read his check on the turn after the min raise by bone as “I hope that king helped u sir so please shove the rest of your chips in and I hope u make your flush on the river”.

.

The 1200 bet on the river looked like a genuine value bet to me trying to squeeze some more chips out of the bone esp if he hit a flush on the river.

.
All I can say USMC is that you win the hand if I am sitting in Handbone’s seat
.

Handbone on the other hand I thought he had AKsh or AJsh or AQsh and was drawing to the nut flush. I don't believe he would call preflop with 44 or 55 .
.
His min raise on the flop sent a message that he was committed to the hand and could take down the pot if usmc completely missed the flop.
.
His check on the turn gave him a free card on the river. Even though he made his flush on the river the board paired paint so why shove the rest of your chips.

.

When the hole cards were turned over I was flabbergasted.
.
If I played either hand I probably would have lost. Both players show good courage and I would have believed the story usmc was trying to tell.
.
To tell u the truth I would have more than likely folded my JJ preflop vs an UTG 4xBB raise from the big stack that has been playin' tight.
.

This my friends is why I am on the rail watching the top players instead of being one of the top players.
.

My hat is off to both players and deeply thank Handbone for sharing his thoughts.
.

What a fantastic free poker lesson I got on Sunday.
.

Carry On
