Poker Hand Nicknames
By songplayerSep 24, 08 01:45 PM

Yesterday a lady asked me how AK got named Big Slick and what are some of the names of other hands. The Big aspect is no mystery since it is the highest two cards you can get without having a pocket pair. It is referred to Big Slick because of the fact that it is a slippery hand that one can easily loose a fortune over. The nickname originates partly from Anna Kournikova a former tennis pro’s initials, A.K. In addition to playing on Kournikova’s intials, the hand nickname also has roots in an analogy between the pro and the hand, they both are said to look better than they play. Other nicknames for Big Slick include but not limited to are Space Cowboy, Walking Back to Houston, Big Ugly, Santa Barabara, Machine Gun, and Big Slick in a suit (if suited), Salt Lake Pair. Walking Back to Houston was named because the old time poker players would play this hand so well that they’d leave their opponents walking back to Houston.
Many of the original names were established in the old west table games. A8 "Dead Man's Hand" - Wild Bill Hickock got shot from behind holding that hand. However, with the popularity of televised poker growing, so is the list of pop cultured inspired poker hand names. Many of the most widely used poker hand nicknames are starting to get new names based on pop culture icons. Here's a few of my favorite pop culture poker hand nicknames: AK "Anna Kournikova" - she's good looking but rarely wins. QQ "Hilton Sisters" - America's Royalty.

I made up my own names for the cards,as I remember associations better than numbers. How about Rocket Sex (A6), with clothes (suited. I had a lot of fun doing it.
